Savoy Truffle: London

London calling to the faraway towns...

My friend and I took the train down to London on Thursday to visit the British Library.  We went to see a special exhibit called Royal Manuscripts; The Genius of Illumination, which featured over 150 illuminated manuscripts. They dated from as early as the 8th century, although the majority were medieval (11th to 16th c).  We made the most of our day and went to Notting Hill afterwards for a walk down Portobello Road before heading back up north...

St. Pancras Station/Hotel; a Victorian Dream

God planning out the Universe...

ST. PANCRAS

After all this won't you give me a smile...

Portobello Road, Portobello Road...

Street where the riches of ages are stowed.

Anything and everything a chap can unload
Is sold off the barrow in Portobello road.

You’ll find what you want in the Portobello Road.

Rare alabaster? Genuine plaster!

A filigreed samovar owned by the czars.
A pen used by Shelley? A new Boticelli?
The snipper that clipped old King Edward’s cigars?

Waterford Crystals? Napoleon’s pistols?
Society heirlooms with genuine gems!

There’s pure inspiration in every creation.

No cheap imitations, not here in me store.

With garments as such as was owned by a Duchess.
Just once at some royal occasion of yore.

In Portobello Road, Portobello Road
The fancies and fineries of ages are showed.

A lady will always feel dressed a la mode
In frillies she finds in the Portobello road.

Tokens and treasures, yesterday’s pleasures
Cheap imitations of heirlooms of old
Dented and tarnished, scarred and unvarnished
In old Portobello they’re bought and they’re sold

Street where the riches of ages are stowed...

Artifacts to glorify our regal abode

Are hidden in the flotsam in Portobello road.

You’ll find what you want in the Portobello Road

Portobello Road is a feast for the eyes!

Time to head home to York...

So off we go to Platform 9 3/4 to catch the Hogwarts Express!

Yesterday...A day in Harrogate

Sofia and I had a day off in Harrogate, a lovely Victorian spa-town, just west of York with our American friend Elizabeth, who is also completing her Masters in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management. We did a little shopping at Primark, the only store in England we can afford to shop at, and then took Sofia to the original Betty's Tea Room for a pre-birthday lunch.

Even here I can stumble across beautiful stained glass.

Silver service and the best table awaited us as we took our seats
in the front corner of the cafe.

A great spot for people watching, lucky to be out of the rain. We couldn't
really complain though as its the first rain we've seen in weeks!

Everywhere you go, gorgeous flowers await your every turn.

Our lunch... and of course tea!

Betty's famous staff in their traditional uniforms.

A teapot collage.

The cutest petit-fours you've ever seen.

And of course the best tea.

Betty's grand facade.

Betty's first opened in 1910.

The worst wedding souveniers I've seen...

until I saw this!

Back in York walking home from the train station,
we are greeted by more stunning flowers!

and more.

And a Cricket match on the Knavesmire.

This was in someone's front garden!?

Sofia dutifully carrying home the shopping.
Don't worry its not all clothes; some of its just groceries!
